Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a restoration that covers or caps a tooth, returning it to its normal size and shape while strengthening it and improving its appearance. Our goal is to provide dentistry that is virtually indistinguishable from surrounding teeth. We replace broken teeth, existing crowns and fillings with restorations that look and feel just like your natural teeth.

Dental crowns are used to strengthen and improve the shape, size or color of teeth. They can support broken or weak teeth or those with large fillings; provide a smooth, strong, attractively contoured surface for stained, misshapen or otherwise abnormal teeth; and aid in the support of bridges and other implants. This type of restoration is used for a long lasting correction of dental problems that cannot otherwise be repaired. Crowns can often last for 20 to 30 years, which is considered permanent for a dental treatment.

What is the dental crown procedure like?

Fitting a crown requires at least two office visits. During the first appointment, we will remove decay and possibly a portion of the tooth, reshaping it so the crown can fit in securely and comfortably. After the tooth is prepared, we will make an impression of your teeth and gums, which is sent to a laboratory to construct your custom crown.  In the meantime, you will be provided with a temporary crown to wear.

At your next visit, the temporary crown is removed and the final crown is fitted and adjusted.  Once the dentist is certain that it is aligned correctly, we will cement the crown into place.

What are the capabilities of crowns?

Crowns are a very reliable solution for major dental problems that have resulted in a severely damaged or missing tooth. There are several different materials used for crown restorations, each with their own benefits.  Metal crowns preserve more of the tooth structure and withstand biting and chewing forces well.  Porcelain fused to metal crowns and all porcelain crowns can be color-matched to your teeth for the most natural look.

Crowns provide a strong, sturdy, aesthetically pleasing replacement that can tolerate the same pressures as a regular tooth, letting patients enjoy the convenience of eating, speaking and smiling without any difficulties.

Rear teeth that hold large fillings are often prone to developing hairline cracks on their surface. Placing crowns on these teeth can relieve the resultant pain and restore full dental function. In front teeth, stains or chipping may cause embarrassment or older fillings may weaken the structure of the tooth. Porcelain crowns can provide more support than porcelain veneers. In teeth with root canal fillings, crowns can protect against breakage.
