Why do I have so many cavities?

There’s no question that cavities can be a nuisance. They are painful, both physically and for your wallet, and they can make you dread visits to the dentist. Still, they are one of the most common situations we treat in our New York offices. Many times, a patient dealing with a cavity has had one or more in the past or will have others in the future. So why are they so common, and how can they be avoided? Here are a few things to keep in mind.

Daily Care

Proper oral health, including a cavity-free smile, starts with you. When you are at home, it is important that you maintain a regular hygiene routine that includes brushing and flossing. Depending on your situation, other agents, like a WaterPik and mouthwash might also come in handy. Technique is just as important as the products that you use. Be sure to brush for two full minutes, using soft strokes and reaching all of your teeth (yes–even the ones in the back!). Some people find that listening to a certain song can help them measure the time and help it pass more quickly. You should also take time to clean out between each of your teeth with floss. Your toothbrush and paste should be ADA compliant and not be too rough or abrasive on your mouth. Regular Cleanings

Dentists are professionally trained to detect and treat cavities and other concerns before they get too out of control in your mouth. We do this with X-rays, in-depth exams, and deep cleanings where we spot problems from their very start. To avoid developing cavities, it is important that you see your dentist twice a year so we can take proper precautions and help your mouth defend off decay and damage. Additionally, if you feel an ache in your mouth, it is important that you don’t put off a visit to the dentist. Treating a cavity at its most early stages can prevent more extensive damage and repair later. It can also help you avoid unnecessary pain! If you have children, be sure to share the same information with them. By teaching them early, you can help set them up for a lifetime of healthy teeth.

Avoiding “Bad” Foods

Most things are fine in moderation, but when you start consuming an abundance of candy, soda, and other sugary treats, your mouth is at a greater risk of developing cavities. Be mindful of what you eat and drink, and avoid rewarding children with sugary treats as this can lead to negative behaviors down the line. Instead, opt for healthy choices like vegetables and water. When you do decide to indulge, be sure to clean your mouth thoroughly to keep problematic residue from sticking around too long. This is especially important to remember as you head to bed, so be particularly mindful of midnight snacks and refrigerator raids.
